The NEON Working Group, Addressing Differential Outcomes for Diverse Learners, started in 2015 and is chaired by Karen Lipsedge from Kingston University. The Working Group was formed in recognition of the evolving needs of a diverse student body, and it seeks to evaluate and discuss inclusive and adaptable strategies that enhance our students’ ability to reach their potential within the classroom and beyond.
To support not only students, but also practitioners in addressing the often complex and nuanced needs of differential learners, we see the Working Group as a supportive and collaborative space in which time is devoted to addressing potential challenges and exploring innovative approaches to developing good practice in this area by way of practical discussions, research/case study analysis, and peer support. To enhance interaction and collaboration, each Working Group meeting, tends to start with a presentation from a guest speaker working in this space, followed by small and whole group discussions, focused on the topic and approach under consideration, some strategies for adopting a similar approach in our respective institutions, as well as the challenges and benefits.
Who are our members?
In short, they are as diverse as the student body under consideration and have a range of different perspectives and needs! Most participants attend regularly to learn about and share good practice and to benefit from a supportive environment to address potential challenges. Indeed, it is this aspect that participants indicate they value the most. They also highlight the range of speakers who join us and the topics covered. In recent meetings, for instance, we have considered how to diversify the Music curriculum, the value of reading groups for discussing potentially challenging topics, such as race, gender and class, and the importance of inclusive language for enhancing students’ sense of belonging. Meanwhile, at our next Working Group meeting in October 2024, will focus on the power of storytelling in an inclusive curriculum.
As Chair, I see the NEON Working Group, Addressing Differential Outcomes for Diverse Learners Workshop, as an inclusive and inspirational space open to all. The opportunity to discuss and reflect on the needs of our diverse student body and address challenges is limited. Our Working Group provides a space in which to learn from and share good practice with one another and, hopefully, to be inspired. I hope to see you at the next Working Group meeting!
