Encouraging students from a care leaving background to attend the University of Cumbria

NEON Widening Access Initiative Award – WINNER

Hannah Pears

Since the beginning of the academic year 2013/14, this project has involved unique training for foster carers and social workers within Cumbria and into Lancashire. The training covers how a young care leaver can progress through their educational journey and outlines support available to them. In addition to this, this project works with the children by going out into the community. In 2010, there was only one care leaver studying at the University of Cumbria across the whole institution.  There are now 56 care leavers. The future aim is to keep the student body of care leavers increasing, carry on offering excellent outreach services and monitor and increase the retention rate.
