Widening Access and Equality of Opportunity – Closing Gaps and Increasing Participation.

Building an evidence-based Access and Participation Plan online series of events

  • Date

      10/04/2024

  • Time

      10:00 am - 4:00 pm

Identifying and addressing risk is central to the new Access and Participation Plans (APPs). This series of events provides the opportunity to identify how across the whole student lifecycle you can address risk through powerful interventions that work and strategic planning.

This is the first of three, separate online events, each one concentrating on a different aspect of the student lifecycle. Each event will include case studies of initiatives led by NEON members and opportunities for sharing knowledge and working together on common challenges. The two other events are:  Bridging attainment gaps, improving completion and achieving student potential and  Getting students into productive graduate employment and further study.

  • Widening Access and Equality of Opportunity – closing gaps and increasing participation event (10th April)  will feature:
    • University of Derby: Wave 1 provider – as a wave 1 provider the University of Derby will explain their experiences of going through the APP process and how the progress they have been making.
    • University of Reading: Reading Scholars – Reading Scholars is a three year programme (start of year 10 to end of year 12), with two entry points for young people from a widening access background.
    • University of Surrey: Surrey Stars – a strategic programme, developed collaboratively with partner schools, to provide a progressive programme of attainment raising activity.
    • University of Warwick: Warwick Scholars – multi-intervention programming from widening access target groups through A-Levels to undergraduate study.

The aim of the event is to give HEPs practical examples of the types of approaches and interventions they could include in their APPs thus helping other organisations examples of practice that will help them to deliver their own plans.

In addition to the presentations each event will allow delegates to interact and share their own experiences of developing approaches which are being adopted to meet their own risks and meet the goals set out within their APPs.

These events promise to help HEPs who attend with their APP development and submit plans that will make a difference to learners who we all work so hard to support.

All events in these series  will be from 10am-4pm and will be run over Zoom.
