Widening Access Initiative (Retention and Success) – Commendation
The Flying Start Programme, put in place 3 years ago as a pilot, is a variety of bespoke sessions aimed at disadvantaged students and prospective students transitioning into HE – either internal or external applications. The sessions cover HE student life and expectations, time management, research skills, academic writing and much more. Sessions are provided by a team of HE Learning Mentors and are bespoke and tailored to individuals, small groups and curriculum areas’ needs. The sessions are open to all students and applicants, but are also targeted to ensure those who may need them most get them. Flexible dates and times are offered to ensure maximum attendance for these cohorts. In 2015/16, Flying Start Sessions were provided to over 330 students – before or at the onset of their courses – 93% of whom are still on course.
